Ames Animal Shelter and Control . . . where best friends meet

About the Shelter

In 2008 we rescued and accepted 935 dogs and cats. Only 82 of them were untreatable, not rehabilitatable, or in very poor health. That means 853, or 90 % (we've been at or very near this percentage for over 13 years) were claimed or adopted. Incoming numbers are down. Thank you, Ames for being a good pet owning community.  Thank you, Animal Officers and Shelter Personnel, for all you do too. It takes good people to make good things happen in the interest of pets and people! Because of Ames' unique resident population, veterinarians and animal shelter and control we are fortunate to have more RPKs than IPKs (responsible pet keepers vs. irresponsible pet keepers).

Other duties in a year? Responded to 2276 field calls, handled 267 wild animals (many going to rehab), issued 36 citations, received 15,341 annual phone calls, and 19,207 visitors to our facility, removed 296 animals struck by vehicles (mostly wild, and a few domestic animals). We provide 66 hours of Animal Controlling weekly, law enforcement, mediation, humane education, referrals, educational support and cruelty and neglect investigations.

We care every day of the year for our pets at the shelter (about 40 hours a week per year), providing them sustenance, health, and a second, third, and sometimes fourth chance! We also offer other programs such as volunteers, pets for seniors, spay/neuter assistance, and more opportunities.

We never stop educating about how spaying one can save the lives of thousands. Please make a difference for animals in Ames by educating those around you and by supporting the humane efforts of the Ames Animal Shelter and Control program.  But always, first care for your pets and any pets close to you!
