Public Art Commission Subcommittees

Art Around the Corner Committee

The Art Around the Corner Committee improves Ames by facilitating the selection and temporary placement of sculpture exhibits in the downtown. This involves an annual call for entries from Iowa and regional artists, juried selection of art, rotation and installation of art, and publicity of public arts in the downtown area.

Art Collection / Archive / Maintenance Committee

The archive committee is charged with the tasks of creating and maintaining an illustrated catalog of artwork owned by the city, in both printed and electronic forms; keeping an historical record of Public Art Commission activities and purchases, including documentation of events, publicity and media coverage; keeping records of maintenance and repairs performed on artwork owned by the city and affiliated with the Commission; working with  city officials to develop maintenance schedules; and seeing that the a Public Art Commission web site is kept up to date.

Education / Information Committee

The purpose of this committee is to increase public awareness of art acquisition processes and communicate the value of public art and art in public places to the Ames community.  In order to achieve this purpose, we focus on three activities.  We ensure that all public art works in the City of Ames are properly identified.  We host an annual or biennial public venue such as an open house or an art dedication event.  We establish and maintain ongoing relationships and contacts with Ames area media, create press releases for Commission events and announcements.

Neighborhood Sculpture Committee

The Neighborhood Sculpture Committee wishes to select and place one or two pieces of art currently on display in the Art Around the Corner Exhibit in the Ames Main Street area. The Committee would like to collaborate with any Ames neighborhood that might be interested in acquiring one of these works.

Ada Hayden Park Committee

The Ada Hayden Park Committee works with the Ames Parks and Recreation Department to identify a site in the park for a new work of public art. It also explores the possibility for grant applications to supplement the budget.

City Hall Collection Committee

The responsibility of this committee is to oversee the acquisition and placement of artwork in the city hall and other official city locations, and to periodically rotate the pieces among the locations.
