The City of Ames employs more than 500 dedicated staff members in 18 departments and divisions to serve the residents of Ames.  The City of Ames is a full-service local government which includes utilities such as Ames Electric Services, Ames Water Plant, and Ames Water Pollution Control.  Our emergency response team includes Ames Fire Department, Ames Police Department and our Emergency Communications Center.  Other City of Ames departments include Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Planning and Housing, Legal, Human Resources, Finance, and Fleet.

The Ames Public Library is a municipal library that operates under the leadership of the Library Board of Trustees. Additionally, our community-wide public transit system, CyRide, is a partnership between the City of Ames, Iowa State University, and ISU's Student Government.

Chief Shawn Bayouth has been with the Ames Fire Department as a Deputy Chief of Support Services since 2007.  He began his fire service career in 1989, and has been a Chief Officer since 2000.


Chief Bayouth's educational background includes a PhD in Industrial Technology (Occupational Safety) from Iowa State University, an MS in Human Resource Development from Indiana State University, a BS in Fire Administration and Management from Western Illinois University, and an AA in Fire Administration from Johnson County Community College (KS). His dissertation research involved examining firefighter decision-making in virtual reality environments.

Shawn is a nationally certified paramedic and Fire Officer IV,  a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer (EFO) program at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD, and was recently awarded re-designation as a "Chief Fire Officer" (CFO) through the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
