The Finance Department is responsible for maintaining the fiscal soundness of the City of Ames. Fiscal services provided by the Finance Department include the following:

| Budget | Preparation of the annual budget and capital improvements plan, budget monitoring, financial forecasting and analysis |
| Utility Customer Service | Utility meter reading and billing and collection, water, wastewater, electrical and storm water utilities, parking ticket collection |
| Information Services | Computer, network, and telecommunications services |
| Purchasing (bid lists) | Purchasing, print shop, and messenger services |
| Parking Tickets | Collection and processing of all City of Ames parking tickets |
