Peak Information

As Ames grows, there is a natural demand for more electricity. During the summer, temperatures and humidity create a seasonal demand for more energy. Over time, the utility sets higher and higher summer peaks, creating the need to purchase capacity that is more expensive.

The City of Ames Electric Services' anticipates occasions this summer where great amounts of electricity are demanded from the community.  This means conditions exist that may cause the utility to establish a new high demand for electricity. The current high of 126.2 MW was set on July 31, 2006. As the electric system rises toward this peak, the utility will signal the community by issuing a peak alert.

Electric rates in Ames are well below neighboring utilities, and in order to continue to keep costs down, the community is called upon to reduce the amount of electricity being used. In the long run, this is accomplished with improvements in energy efficiency. However, on peak alert days more immediate measures are necessary.

Some things that you can do to help reduce demand are:

Following these energy tips will not only help reduce system demand, but if done on a consistent basis could save you 15% - 20% on your summer bills.

Watch for future peak alert information, and call Steve Wilson at 515-239-5177 if you have questions.
