| The City of Ames does not provide garbage collection service; rather, it licenses independent haulers for the collection and disposal of garbage and refuse within
the City. The following companies are licensed for the calendar year 2008: Ankeny Sanitation The vehicles used by licensed haulers are inspected annually by the City Sanitarian to insure that the units are in good condition and do not leak liquids. Licensed haulers also provide the City of Ames with evidence of insurance coverage (comprehensive general liability, automobile liability, and Worker's Compensation and Employee's Liability as required by the laws of the State of Iowa). In lieu of making arrangements with a licensed hauler to arrange for scheduled garbage collection, individuals are allowed to collect and haul garbage and refuse from their own residences or business properties only. In the City of Ames, three terms are used (Section 10, Municipal Code) to distinguish between various types of trash:
Preparation:Yard waste must be separated from garbage or refuse prior to collection or disposal. Collection:Containers of garbage, refuse and/or yard waste may not weigh more than 65 pounds when set out for collection. Garbage and refuse is to be placed in water-tight receptacles with tight-fitting covers, and must be provided by the householder or the occupant of any building or place of business. The receptacles must be kept on the ground level in a location convenient for pick-up. Brush and tree trimmings are to be securely tied in bundles not more than four (4) feet long and not more than two (2) feet in diameter and bound by means of hemp, sisal, cotton or other non-metallic biodegradable cord material. No single piece may be more than three (3) inches in diameter. Licensed haulers can provide information about their collection routes and schedules, policies on yard waste and recycling, and prices. Disposal:Garbage and most refuse is accepted at the Arnold O. Chantland Resource Recovery Plant. You may take glass to the Resource Recovery Plant free of charge or drop it into the large bins located at Fareway, Cub Foods, HyVee West and the Ames Area Redemption Center. Yard waste is accepted at All-Season's Contracting, 407 Freel Drive. Other recyclable materials (such as paper, aluminum, tires, batteries, etc.) are accepted at several local recycling services and salvage yards found listed in the yellow pages of the telephone directory. Licensed garbage collectors can also provide information on their recycling procedures. Further information:
