CNNMoney.com attributes Ames' integral interaction between the University and City, the beautiful parks, and the friendliness of the community as just some of the reasons Ames is one of the "Best Places to Live."
   
"Fifth Best Place to Live the Simple Life," AARP (2009)
AARP calls Ames a "gracious town - with broad lawns, leafy neighborhoods, pretty parks and ponds - and its distinctly rural flavor is the key to its urban charm." Only five cities in America made this list.
   
"One of the Best Small Cities for (Business) Startups," BusinessWeek, 2009
BusinessWeek chose one city in each state that best encompassed factors of affordability, availability of talent, existence of a thriving business community, and quality of life.
   
"The 6th Smartest City in America," Forbes Magazine (2008)
Forbes compiled information from Sperling's BestPlaces on the population of metropolitan areas in the U.S., then ranked them based on the percentage of their population age 25 and older with at least a bachelor's degree. 
   
"One of the 25 Best Places to Find a Job," CareerBuilder.com (2008)
According to CareerBuilder.com, low unemployment rates seem harder to come by in today's economy.  Depending on the month, Ames has the first or second lowest unemployment rate in the state, and the one of the lowest in the country.
"One of the Top 100 Communities for Youth," America's Promise (2008)
The America's Promise Alliance and Capital One awarded this honor to Ames as one of 100 communities in the country that find unique and effective ways to ensure young people receive the resources necessary to stay in school and succeed. 
   
"Listed in the Top 10 Places to Live a Long Life,"  CNNMoney.com (2008)
Counties on the list of Top Places to live a long life enjoy some of the highest life expectancies in the U.S.  Story County is ranked No. 2 with a life expectancy rate at birth of 81.02 years. The site publicizes the numerous and easy ways to appreciate the Ames community.
   
"One of the Best Places to Raise Kids," BusinessWeek (2008)
BusinessWeek's 50 most kid-friendly small towns and suburbs in the U.S. were chosen based on low crime rates and cost of living, as well as good schools, test scores, and cultural events and amenities.  Ames was listed as one of only three Iowa cities named as great places to raise a family.
