Snow Routes

If It's Snowing, Get Going to Avoid Towing!

The "Snow Ordinance" is a municipal law designed to facilitate the snow removal process.  The snow ordinance goes into effect and plowing starts with two inches of snow has fallen on arterial streets (such as Duff Avenue, Lincoln Way, 13th Street, and Grand Avenue).

Snow routes are marked by red, white and blue signs, and cars parked on snow routes will be ticketed and towed.  When the ordinance is in effect, owners need to move their cars off these routes immediately.  It would be wise to move your car in the evening, if a storm is predicted to hit during the night.

All cars should be moved to off-street parking or to streets that are not designated snow routes. It is important to remember the snow ordinance remains in effect until the streets are completely plowed from curb to curb, AND it has stopped snowing.

To assist in the plowing efforts, all Ames residents are asked to remove parked cars from residential streets. However, only those on snow routes are required to move them.
